Hygiene methods, attitude and experience of school bullying in orthodontic patients in Quivicán

Introduction: orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances hinders oral hygiene and can predispose to periodontal and aesthetic complications. Objective: To describe the hygiene methods, attitude and experience of bullying in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances in the municipality of Quivicán during February 2024 to February 2025. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 71 patients aged 12 to 35 years with fixed orthodontics. A questionnaire and an interview guide were applied. The variables analyzed were sex, frequency of brushing, hygiene methods, attitudes about oral hygiene and experience of bullying due to the shape or position of the teeth. Results: female patients preferred the toothbrush combined with oral irrigator (14 cases), while the male patients opted for the toothbrush plus interproximal brush (9 cases). The predominant brushing frequency was twice a day (33 patients). An unfavorable attitude towards oral hygiene was identified in 47 patients (26 female and 21 male), 15 patients reported having suffered bullying due to the appearance of their teeth. Conclusions: Insufficient brushing frequency, unfavorable attitudes towards hygiene and a relevant proportion of patients with experience of bullying predominated. These findings underscore the need to implement ongoing educational strategies that address both hygiene habits and the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics during orthodontic treatment.
